The Partito Popular, which has the majority in Huelva has always accused the Socialist national government of promising to build the fast train link but doing nothing about it, whilst the Socialists replied by pointing out that if the city does concede the land for the station then the construction cannot begin.
In fact, during the last Municipal election campaign the Mayor, Pedro Rodriguez repeatedly said that “Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, came to Huelva, deceiving the citizens by saying that he was going to start the work on the station and in fact for over two years he has done nothing", and that the PSOE "has deceived the onubenses by saying that it does not have land on which it has been counting for two years, when in fact it has".
The leader of the Socialist opposition in the City Hall Manuela Parralo pointed out that all the time that Pedro Rodriguez has been saying that he had already handed over the land necessary, he has been lying, and that the document voted now finally gives the ownership of the land to who has the responsibility of building the station. She added that today would mark the beginning of a new stage in the development of Huelva.
The impact of the super fast train service between Madrid and Huelva on both the tourism industry and the development of Huelva will be significant. The train, which is due to enter in service in 2010, and the new Huelva airport are the two most important Public Works projects for the area. There are also plans to build a motorway that directly connects Huelva and Cadiz, along the coast and through the park of Donaña.
