7-yr old killed by Game-boy
A boy of 7 was killed when he plugged his Game-boy into the hotel room socket of a resort hotel in Thailand. Connor O'Keefe was found slumped on the floor of his room at the Sunset Beach Hotel in Patong Beach, Phuket, which had been repaired and upgraded since the tsunami 2 years ago.
Both police and the hotel management said they believed the boy had plugged in his Game-boy while still wet after returning from the swimming pool. Wiraporn Ungathakorn, acting manager of the Sunset Beach Hotel, which is on Patong's beach's ravaged sea-front, said: "The boy had been swimming and went back to his room, we believe he had either plugged in his Game-boy or pulled at the charger while still wet. The water must have gone straight into the plug. The safety cut-out could not save him. He was found by his parents in the room and we sent him to hospital by ambulance. Doctors could not save him. The hotel has paid his medical fees. This was just a tragic accident."
Thai police say they have completed their investigation and found that the hotel was not at fault. Police Lt. Colonel Sopol Borirok said: "No blame has been attached. It was an accident."
Police and local authorities are fearful such incidents could affect tourism, with visitor numbers at the resort only recently returning to pre-tsunami levels.
The parents of the boy - David Skinner, 49 and Kathleen Patricia Curry, 45 - brought the boy's body back to Britain. A British Consular official said: "The paper-work was done very quickly so they could take him home for a proper funeral."
