Built by Sr. Manuel Rivero in 1745, this building reflects the fashionable, bourgeois style of Cádiz houses of the XVIII Century. It was perfectly suited to Sr. Manuel's requirements as his home, administrative centre and for the management of his commercial operations.
The house is constructed around a patio, with four passages with buttressed arches featuring marble columns. It consists of three floors - the ground floor was intended for warehouses and related uses; the mezzanine, for offices administering his mercantile activity and the upper suite for living and social functions. Apart from the main stairs to the three floors, there are two further subsidiary stairs serving the commercial floors.
Its façade of stone masonry is of undeniable beauty. The strong cornices, the locks and the slate dust-sheet which complete the adornment are certainly still most attractive and in a fine state of preservation.
At present, the Casa Grande is the seat of the Municipal Culture Organization, the Municipal Library "Jiménez Barberi" and some exhibition rooms, as well as a small auditorium.
The main local artists exhibit here. Concerts and other cultural and social events, such as the presentation of books, posters of the different festivities and the like take place in the auditorium. |
