US biggest win for 16 years

Ryder Cup format preferable?

After Great Britain and Ireland lost 11½-6½ to the United States early yesterday morning in Oregon - their heaviest Curtis Cup defeat for 16 years - the inevitable question resurfaced. Would it be better to have a Ryder Cup-style European team? Captain Ada O'Sullivan was adamant that, despite the Americans having won 25 of the 34 matches in the series, which began in 1932, the answer was a firm, "No, I do not think so." O'Sullivan was, however, delighted with the decision, announced yesterday, to change to a three-day format, like the Ryder Cup, with foursomes and fourballs on the opening two days and singles on the final day, involving all the players. "That will be absolutely superb," O'Sullivan said. "I feel it is very unfair to the players at the moment to expect them to reach the top of their form in two days. Trailing 7-2 after the first day on the Pacific Dunes course, Great Britain and Ireland won two of the foursomes and halved the other, reducing the deficit to three with the six singles matches remaining. At one stage they led in four of the singles and were level in another, but it all changed on the homeward stretch with only Welsh international Breanne Loucks and Martina Gillen, of Ireland, winning their matches.
