This new bridge over the Carreras River will improve communications between Isla Canela and the city center of Ayamonte. The new bridge will be followed by roadworks on the highway that runs from the bridge to the roundabout that connects Isla Canela and Punta del Moral beaches.
The Andalusian government has allocated nearly 2 million euros for improvements to Isla Canela access.
These roadworks will provide a considerable traffic improvement at the entrance and exit of the tourist areas of Isla Canela and Punta del Moral. The works, will not affect the present road system, since they parallel the current circulation.
Works have commenced on the access bridge to Isla Canela, from Ayamonte's Canela Barrio. These improvements are being executed by the Ministry of Transport and Public Works to allow more traffic to flow into and out of Isla Canela, alleviating the current congestion which occurs mainly on busy weekends and during the Summer.
At present, the bridge has only a single lane in either direction. The improvement plans include the construction of a second bridge, parallel to the existing one, and what was once a single carriageway up-graded to a dual carriageway from the bridge to Isla Canela. This will serve both pedestrians and public transport services.
The new road and bridge infrastructures will also answer the need for more space in the city and its expected growth, with more and more visitors each year. The Plan also bears in mind the Costa Esuri development which will also attract many visiting Isla Canela and Punta del Moral beaches..
The new General Plan of Urban Arrangement envisages a direct road access, to avoid crossing the city. One of the principal aims of the Plan is to adapt the city to its increasingly developing traffic needs.
The new highway will run from the round-about sited next to the present Civil Guard barracks to the location of the new bridge.
