Festival of Flamenco
On: 15th July 2006
Venue: Campo de Deportes del Convento de San Francisco, Lebrija
Province: Sevilla
The first performance of the Caracolá Lebrijana took place in 1966. Since then, and until the present time, this flamenco event has continued to develop continuously from the important Eastern-influenced style, considered by critics and artists alike as one of the most significantly appreciated and celebrated in all Spain. This significance is borne out by the innumerable artists in song, instrumental music and dance who have paraded by in the past.
Names of mythical and emblematic stature who have written and sung the history of the Flamenco - some living; others, unfortunately, already disappeared. But, of all, we still have their voice, memory and presence in Lebrija, cradle of renowned flamenco. The list is long, but we can mention artists like:
'Lebrijano', Curro Malena, Miguel Funi, Manuel de Paula, Pepe Montaraz, 'Gamba de la Isla -Shrimp of the Island', Antonio Mairena, Jose Menese, Manuel Mairena, Antonio Núñez "Chocolate", Jose Mercé, 'El Cabrero - the Goatherd', Nano de Jerez, Pedro Bacán, Pedro Roca - Rock, Juan of the Gastor, Manolo Brenes, Choral Matilde, the Viá, Pepa Montes, Shell Vargas, Carmen Montiel, 'Antonio the Pipe' who represent just a small proportion of memorable performers.
They have all elevated the name and prestige of the Caracolá Lebrijana, transforming it into one of the more important contemporary festivales flamencos and a necessary reference point in the flamenco panorama.
