New York Yankees pitcher, Cory Lidle, was killed when the small aircraft he was piloting crashed into a 52-story building on Manhattan's upper-echelon Upper East Side on Wednesday. Lidle, 34, who owned the four-seater aeroplane, died along with his flying instructor.

Gillette Tri-Nations: Webb inspires Kiwis to victory
A magnificent first-half try by Brent Webb helped New Zealand to a bruising victory over the Lions as the Kiwis got their campaign back on track. The hosts lost their opening two clashes to Australia but tries from the Leeds-bound Webb, Motu Tony and Iosia Soliola set them on their way before late tries by Paul Wellens and Gareth Ellis gave the scoreline a more realistic look and, more importantly, boosted the visitors' points difference.

Football hero Best immortalised on £5 notes
George Best is to be immortalised on a million commemorative £5 bank notes by the Ulster Bank, which will next month issue the limited edition notes as a tribute to the soccer genius next month to mark the first anniversary of his death. The celebration of one of Northern Ireland's best-known sporting heroes will feature George Best in both his Northern Ireland and Manchester United strips.
