Dogs seized
Police have seized 8 pit bull-terriers which they believe were being trained for fighting. Officers raided addresses in Merseyside following the death of Ellie Lawrenson,aged 5 years, who was killed by a type of pit bull-terrier at her grandmother’s home in the early hours of Jan 1.
Of the 8 dogs seized, six were from an address in St Helens, the town where Ellie died. The other two were taken from an address in Widness.

Terrorists target UK troops using GoogleEarth According to Army intelligence sources, terrorists attacking British bases in Basra are using aerial footage displayed by Google's internet tool to pin-point their attacks. Documents seized during raids on the homes of insurgents uncovered print-outs from photographs taken from GoogleEarth, which pinpoints virtually all features on our planet. The satellite photographs show in detail the buildings inside the bases and vulnerable areas such as tented accommodation, lavatory blocks and where lightly-armoured Land Rovers are parked. |

'Mad Englishman' breaks balloon altitude record The British explorer, David Hempleman-Adams, has broken the world altitude record in a hot air balloon, having endured temperatures of minus 60C whilst flying his balloon at 32,500ft (6.1 miles) – just above the cruising height of a jumbo jet – and breaking a 27-year record. An airline pilot flying below the 50-year-old adventurer radioed him to say: "Only a mad Englishman would do that in an open basket." It was his 4th attempt to break the record set by Carol Davis, an American, who flew at 31,299ft in 1979. |

Only 7% of EU spending validated A shocking 7% only of the European Union's budget has been spent legally and correctly, auditors have found. their findings have raised more doubts about the management of the EU's finances . Last year, the budget, administered by the European Commission, was €121 billion (£80 billion). However, the European Court of Auditors, charged with auditing the collection and spending of the funds, has been unable to sign off the accounts for 12 years in a row. After the most recent examination of accounts, the auditors have concluded that administration, which accounts for only 7% of the overall budget, was the sole area of spending for which good "supervisory and control systems" were in place, with few errors found. | |
